BYD's Atto 1, a pint-size electric vehicle (EV) that's currently sold in Australia, has a new, larger sibling set to debut in China. The Atto 1's design philosophy is maintained, but with notable styling changes. These include wider headlights, a single shoulder line along the side, a less pronounced upward kink to the side window line, a longer rear overhang, and tail-lights that no longer stretch across the entire width of the car. The charging port has been relocated to the rear fender, and plastic wheel-arch protectors have been deleted.
The new Seagull, as it's known in China, measures 4205mm long, 1810mm wide, 1570mm tall, and rides on a 2650mm wheelbase. This represents a significant increase in dimensions compared to the current model, with the new Seagull being 215mm longer, 95mm wider, 20mm lower, and having a 150mm longer wheelbase. Despite the increase in size, the kerb weight remains largely the same, with the base spec tipping the scales at 1180kg and the better-equipped variant weighing 1255kg.
One of the most notable changes is the introduction of five seats, whereas the current model is sold as a four-seat hatch in most markets. The new Seagull will be available with a 95kW electric motor driving the front wheels, which is a significant upgrade over the current offering in China. The motor output in Australia-bound Atto 1 vehicles ranges from 65kW/175Nm to 115kW/220Nm, so the new Seagull's motor sits in the middle of this range.
The new Seagull will use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) units from FinDreams, but no details about battery pack options were revealed in the regulatory filing. It's unclear whether BYD intends to bring the new Seagull to Australia as a replacement for the current Atto 1, which was launched locally in 2024 after going on sale in China in 2023. The Atto 1 is also sold as the Seagull in China, the Dolphin Surf in Europe, and the Dolphin Mini in Latin America.
This larger, more powerful, and more spacious EV from BYD is a significant development in the electric vehicle market, and it will be interesting to see how it performs in the Chinese market and whether it will be brought to other regions. Personally, I think the introduction of five seats is a smart move, as it caters to a wider range of consumers. What makes this particularly fascinating is the potential for BYD to expand its market reach with this new model. In my opinion, the new Seagull could be a game-changer for the company, especially if it can maintain the same level of quality and performance as the current Atto 1.
A detail that I find especially interesting is the potential for BYD to offer a more affordable EV with the new Seagull. The current Atto 1 is already a competitive option in the market, and the new model could further solidify BYD's position as a leading electric vehicle manufacturer. What this really suggests is that BYD is committed to innovation and expansion in the EV market, and it's likely to continue pushing the boundaries of what's possible in this rapidly evolving industry.
